2010/11 MAM Holiday Party

President’s Message

Dear MAM Members and Friends,

It is with great humility that I accept the honor of being your new President. MAM was founded on the hopes of Malaysians residing in the state of Michigan to unite and create a network and community of Malaysians within the state. More so than that, the hope is to build and foster close life-long friendships with fellow ex-patriots in our adopted home and country and to leave a legacy for the second and subsequent generations of Malaysian Americans.

As your Vice- President in the preceding two and a half years, I know first-hand how hard MAM’s officers and Board members worked, organizing events such as the Merdeka Picnics, Holiday Parties and Chinese New Year celebration. MAM had also participated in community activities including the Council of Asian Pacific American’s, (CAPA), Splendor of the East and Food Tasting events.

Furthermore, MAM Officers, Board members and members at large worked with the University of Michigan Malaysian Students Association, (UMiMsa) to help with shuttling new student from the airport, and collaborated with them in the picnic that was held in Ann Arbor. We are currently soliciting and delivering gently used warm clothing and household items to help new and old student alike to adjust to their home away from home. I encourage members to participate in this endeavor as the gift of giving is a rewarding experience.

Aside from the above, the Officers and Board members were very involved in housekeeping/legal activities within the organization, most of which were transparent to you. Their dedication, hard work and time they have expended on MAM’s behalf is highly commendable. Hence, I hope for you to join me in applauding and thanking them.

Nevertheless, the hard work continues. We have a rigorous agenda of activities planned for the next twelve months. These activities will be posted in MAM’s website to be viewed at your convenience. Although I have a panel of great colleagues in MAM’s new Officers and Board Members, (seven strong), the help and support of members like yourself is necessary for such events to be successful. Our organization is young yet, and we are still laying the foundation for the organization. As such MAM needs as much contribution as possible from you, the members. As the great late president John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”

Along the same line, I challenge each MAM members to “Ask not what MAM can do for you, but what you can do for MAM.” By being involved you are not only laying the bricks of foundation for the organization but also cementing the legacy of your Malaysian experience and heritage forevermore for future generations of Malaysian Americans. I believe that with your contributions, MAM will be better able to facilitate and provide greater opportunities for fellow Malaysians to meet and cultivate tremendous friendships. This will naturally result in Malaysians living in Michigan to coalesce as a close knit community, hence realizing the hopes that this organization was founded upon.

Thank you for your continuing support.

MAM Chinese New Year Celebration

The Malaysian Association of Michigan (MAM) is hosting its first CNY gathering to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year.  All Malaysians and friends are welcome!   Please RSVP by 2/8/10.  See "Events" for details.

Download event flyer here.

Legend of the Chinese New Year Celebration

About the year 2000 BC, during the Zhou Dynasty, the Chinese started to celebrate the Chinese New Year. From 2000 BC to about 141 BC, the celebration was held on different dates under different emperors. However, during the Han dynasty and under the rule of Emperor Wu from (141 BC to 87 BC) the people of China started to celebrate the Chinese New Year on the first day of the first month of the lunar calendar.

Legend has it that prior to 2000 BC, an ugly and ferocious beast known as "Nian" was terrorizing the people of China. Nian had a huge mouth and was capable of swallowing a few humans in one bite. On the first and the fifteenth day of each lunar month, Nian would leave its home in the mountains to feast on humans. Consequently the terrified villagers would lock their doors before sunset on the first and fifteenth day of the month to hide from Nian. The Nian's reign of terror was ended by a wise old man of the village. The old man epiphanized that Nian's boldness and ferocity fed on the fear and panic of the people. The old man imparted his epiphany to the people and convinced them to organize and defeat Nian, i.e, by making very loud noises to scare it.

On one moonless and freezing cold night, Nian appeared. The people were ready and anticipating its arrival. The moment Nian opened its mouth in an attempt to devour the people, the people started, in synchrony, to beat their drums and gongs, and lit fireworks. The resulting frightening noises and fire made by the people forced Nian to back off. Like all bullies, Nian was terrified when challenged. Nian tried to run away from the people but was blocked at every juncture. Eventually, Nian collapsed from exhaustion. Then the people converged upon, attacked and killed the evil Nian. When Nian was killed the people celebrated their victory.

Every year thereafter, on the first day of the first month of the lunar calendar, the people celebrate the passing of the Nian. Hence, the celebration was characterized as "Guo Nian", which originally meant "passed or survived the Nian". During these celebrations, the people kept the tradition of beating the drums and gongs, and lighting fireworks.
